Skip The Needle But Do Not Skip Doll Fest 2026
Twelve months flew by, but that just means we’re able to welcome in the countdown to the second staging of the fantastic "Doll Fest" event. With all the pomp and circumstance of fascism on full display presently enveloping our lives, we need something subversive to keep us treading water. What better flotation device than to have this on the calendar?
Five Female Artists You Should Be Listening To Now
Skip The Needle is a band from Oakland that plays, in their own words, “black dyke rock.” STN formed a decade ago, but their experience in the Bay Area music scene goes even further back. The four members — guitarists Katie Cash and Shelley Doty, bassist Vicki Randle (a veteran of The Tonight Show) and drummer Kofy Brown — draw on a wide variety of influences. The result is a sociopolitical blend of soul and rock that gets you moving as it makes you think.
EP Review: Skip the Needle –
Wake Up Wake Up Wake Up
Listening to the new EP Wake Up Wake Up Wake Up from Oakland-based, black queer band Skip the Needle, you’ll feel like you’re being transported back to the 70’s. The group’s blend of rock, funk, soul, folk and punk, paired with the EP’s raw production and socially conscious lyrics, sounds like a lost record from that era.
In a time when LGBTQ+ Rights are vehemently under attack from the current presidential administration, Oakland’s Skip the Needle retaliate with a sound they call “black dyke rock.”
Skip The Needle Channels Collective Power on “Until We Overcome”
Skip The Needle’s new single “Until We Overcome” highlights their unique fusion of distinct voices, blending punk, funk, and soul, while promoting inclusive empowerment and community togetherness.
Skip the Needle Rallies Listeners to Battle On with New Single ‘Until We Overcome’
These days, many artists have traded their instruments for software plugins, but Vicki Randle (bass/vocals), Katie Cash (guitar/vocals), Shelley Doty (guitar/vocals) and Kofy Brown (drums/vocals) rock on the good ol’ fashioned way, singing loud and proud an optimistic battle cry that every generation needs to hear: “We’re just down here trying to talk to you / you may think it doesn’t matter what you choose / we need to fight to let the light shine through / there’s nothing in this world that we can’t do.”
